Birdwatching and natural history have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I spent my formative years birdwatching at various coastal sites in East Yorkshire, with occasional trips away to Dorset. In 1985, I joined the RSPB as seasonal warden at Lake Vyrnwy and I was then to spend the next two year's working for the RSPB, before joining the Cheshire Wildlife Trust and settling down in Cheshire in 1987, where I have lived since. After 40 years working in nature conservation or as an ecologist (I had my own Ecological Consultancy for several years) I retired at the end of 2025.
Along with my wife (and fellow OWE Team member), Julia, I have visited many areas of Europe and Africa along with trips to Goa, California and Texas. On all our trips I am accompanied by my camera and lens, taking photographs to use in presentations and talks on cruises and also to photographic and natural societies in the north-west of England and North Wales.
Having retired I tend to do four or five cruises a year with Ocean Wildlife Encounters, sharing my passion for seabirds, cetaceans and the natural world. I have cruised across the Atlantic as a guide / lecturer with OWE, visited Mauritius and Madagascar and cruised back via South Africa to the UK, made three trips to various Atlantic Isles (Canary Islands, Azores and Madera) and to Iceland (plus Greenland and Faroe Islands). In addition, I have represented OWE on several trips to the Scottish Islands and Highlands. When not cruising, I can normally be found behind the camera, taking even more photographs!
